On Sunday August 1 at just before 8AM Rescue 20 was dispatched to Long Lane and Marshall Road along with Company 36 Cardington and Medic 103 Delco Hospital Medics for a vehicle over an embankment and in the water. Little did members know that this would be the beginning of a very long day. It had begun to rain in the Upper Darby area several hours earlier and massive flooding was beginning all over the Township. The first water rescue crews managed to remove a man from the roof of his car after he was trapped by the quickly rising water. In total there were five water rescues for the Company in just over two hours. During one rescue the crew from Ladder 20 assisted in removing about 15 people from the roof of the Pathmark at 69th and Marshall after they were forced to the roof by rising water. In all the Company ran 12 calls in just under 12 hours including the 5 water rescues 2 investigations 2 building fires 1 service call 1 gas leak and 1 auto accident. Also crews handled numerous pump outs in the local. All 5 Township Fire Companies were involved in numerous calls during the day. While the Township Companies were handling the flooding that was devastating the Township Station 20 became the staging area for the Companies that were coming to cover the Township and assist in the flooded area. Thanks to all the members who gave up a Sunday to assist with all the calls. And a special thanks to the numerous companies that covered and assisted in the Township. Also thanks to Frank Wesnoski for the pictures.
