At about 1120AM on Friday April 16 Company 20 was dispatched to assist Companies 37 Upper Darby and 36 Cardington with a gas leak at Market Street and Copley Road. Crews doing street and sidewalk repairs had struck a 6 gas main breaking it and striking under ground electric lines for a near-by traffic signal. The gas main that was struck was directly in-front of a 4 story apartment building and in the area of the 69th street shopping district. Crews had to evacuate the apartment building as well as the surrounding businesses. Ladder 20 assisted the crews from Squrt 36 with a precautionary line to the rear of apartment building while Engine 20-1 assisted monitoring gas levels in area buildings. Engine 20-2 was placed in staging. While in staging 20-2 responded to 69th Street and Patterson for a car fire that was unfounded. Crews were on location for about 2 12 hours while crews from the gas company worked to repair the broken gas main. Also on location were Companies 26 Highland Park 74 Primos-Secane Delco Hospital Medics and UDPD. Cover for station 20 was provided by Company 19 Lansdowne.
