Around 10:40 am, Friday morning, just after returning from a fire alarm at Delco Hospital, a crew from Company 20 was listening in as the tones began dropping for a working house fire at 75 E. Stewart Ave, in Lansdowne. On the initial assignment were Companies 19 (Lansdowne), 24 (East Lansdowne), 16 (Yeadon), RIT 09 (Sharon Hill) and Medic 105 (Fitz Hospital). Engine 19 dropped a supply line on the way in and arrived to a large three story single home, with heavy fire throughout, and immediately requested the 2nd alarm. As first-in crews went in service with multiple handlines, the 2nd alarm was struck, adding full Companies 20, 03 (Clifton Heights), 09, 04 (Darby #1), 42 (Collingdale #2), and RIT 43 (Holmes). Engines 20-1, 20-2, Ladder 20, and Rescue 20 all took in the Box, and upon arrival began assisting with all fireground operations, from venting windows and operating on the roof to performing secondary searches, pulling walls and ceilings, and extinguishing the fire. As crews opened up, fire was found running the void spaces throughout the home. The stubborn blaze was finally brought under control in about an hour and crews began extensive overhaul. The boys from Station 20 were on scene for about 2 hours before returning to Drexel Hill around 12:45 pm. 25 Volunteers responded to this incident, under the command of D/C 20-9A (M. Morgan).
