FIRST DUE BASEMENT FIRE

Friday, January 25, 2013 17:15
-
During the height of the Friday afternoon rush and brief snow storm sweeping through the area, Companies 20 and 26 (Highland Park), Quint 37 (Upper Darby), RIT-74 (Primos-Secane), and Medic 103-7B (DCMH) were dispatched to 1208 Belfield Ave. for a house fire, reported to be the basement. UDPD arrived with fire visible through a basement window and reported all residents were out of the house. Engine 20-1 (Capt. Stevenson) arrived and stretched an 1 3/4" attack line through the front door. Upon entering the basement the crew found high heat and heavy smoke while searching for the fire. Ladder 26 and Quint 37 began searches and ventilation on the upper floors, as Engine 20-2 (D/C M. Morgan) dropped a supply line from 20-1 to the hydrant and the crew went to the basement to assist 20-1 with fire attack. Rescue 20's crew performed secondary searches and then assisted the truck companies with opening the floors and wallls above the fire. The fire extended into the first floor and was stopped there as the basement crews knocked the bulk of the fire. Tower 74 was put into service for relief and Engine 56 (Manoa) responded as the replacement RIT. The fire was placed under control in about 20 minutes and crews continued to operate in the sub-freezing temps for about 90 minutes. After taking in another building fire in the township, Engine 56 went to Station 20 for cover-up. The Drexel Hill Volunteers were back in the house to thaw out by 6:45 pm. Thanks again to the 56 crew for the assistance and coverage.
